The new shooter from the creator of Counter-Strike didn't become a hit, but he's not worried - critics of low online numbers "will never play your game"
The developers are gradually refining Alpha Response and they have a plan.
Several years ago, Alpha Response was released on PC via Steam in "early access" format. The police action game is being developed by Counter-Strike creator Minh "Gooseman" Le, but the game has not yet become a big hit.
The peak online number reached 1,516 players last summer, and recently this figure has been in the tens of users. However, the developer is not worried; in a recent conversation with Hellcase, he expressed his attitude towards discussing online metrics:
I think it's important for us not to worry too much about what others think, because the people who bring up such topics will never play your game anyway.
He explained that one of the reasons for such low online numbers is that Ultimo Ratio Games does not do any marketing at all, as the team "doesn't want people to come into the game and get a bad impression of it at this stage."
Minh Le said that they plan to promote Alpha Response closer to the release of the full 1.0 version:
Many developers don't have that luxury [...] When they release a game, they expect a lot of players, and if that doesn't happen, then maybe they just can't survive financially. But we can take our time and not worry too much about player numbers [...] Right now, we're kind of hiding in the shadows and gradually refining the game.
The developer said that he hopes to "achieve success comparable to a game like Payday," but even half of its success would be a good result for the team.
