Belarusian clicked on a link and lost items in Dota 2 - a criminal case has been opened
Some digital assets can be very expensive, and fraudsters try to get their hands on them.
The free-to-play Dota 2 features a variety of cosmetic items. They can be sold directly on the marketplace or traded on the black market, sometimes costing over a thousand dollars (70+ thousand rubles).
Therefore, virtual assets are of interest to fraudsters. It recently became known that a 21-year-old resident of Belarus became a victim of cybercriminals. The case went so far that the Minsk police opened a criminal case on the theft of cosmetic items in Dota 2. The value of the assets is estimated at 550 Belarusian rubles (or about 14 thousand Russian rubles).
Reportedly, while playing, he received a request from an unknown user — offering to play together as part of a team. However, this required obtaining a "professional level" status, which the victim did not have.
He was invited to a chat and given a link to a phishing resource, where he entered his data and ultimately gave fraudsters access to his account:
He clicked on the [link] and found himself on a phishing page that outwardly completely copied the official game portal. However, the young man did not notice the differences and entered the required data: password, login, and email address. This was enough for the attackers to gain access to his account, after which they stole all valuable items from his digital inventory and removed the Minsk resident from the group.
Now the police are investigating, and others have been reminded:
Do not click on suspicious links and do not share your personal data, especially if strangers from online games ask for it.
