A tech enthusiast decided to try his hand at game development - without a studio or publisher's help.

Recently, an AI start-up founder caught the attention of those awaiting Grand Theft Auto VI. Ziwen announced the development of his version of the crime action game.

For his work, the tech enthusiast uses various modern AI technologies:

Upgraded to Claude Max 20x specifically for this. Spent a couple of hours structuring the entire project and uploading it to the repository. The sandbox is up and running. No studio and no publisher [...]

Ziwen said that the Godot engine is used for the work, “so that no one can pull an “Epic trick” on us later and rewrite the terms after we’ve already invested.”

Here's what his project looked like on the first day:

Ziwen stated his goal very simply — to release his project before the real GTA VI from Rockstar Games:

It's ambitious, perhaps foolish, but we took it on anyway. If you know how to model, program, create levels, or write music and lore — join us. We are looking for a few participants to “cook” this project.

There is definite progress; on the fourth day, Ziwen published a video showing a bit of gameplay — carjacking, characters, road traffic, and a short walk.

Some of Ziwen's successes

  • The character has a model, all NPCs also have their own models
  • Cars now have models. They start moving.
  • Traffic rules appear
  • Performance has increased

According to a recent interview with Take-Two boss Strauss Zelnick, the official Grand Theft Auto VI release from Rockstar Games is still scheduled for November 2026. This means Ziwen and his team of enthusiasts have about five months left to create their “home-made GTA VI.”
