New Official SSD for PS5 Costs Almost as Much as a PC
SanDisk has revealed the prices for its new line of officially licensed SSDs for PS5. The top-tier 8TB version is priced at almost $3000.
The company introduced the Optimus GX PRO series, moving away from the WD_Black brand. The lineup offers up to 8TB of storage and is advertised as an “officially licensed drive for PlayStation 5 and PlayStation 5 Pro consoles.”
The price has attracted the most attention: the 8TB version costs $2960 (previously, a price of $3700 with a discount was announced). Even the 2TB model is more than $100 more expensive than the base PS5.
The prices are as follows: 1TB — $380, 2TB — $760, 4TB — $1500.
According to PC Part Picker, a similar SSD cost about $640 less than a year ago — an increase of approximately 370%.
The price increase is attributed to the rising cost of components due to demand from AI data centers, which has impacted the consumer electronics market.
Previously, Sony raised PS5 prices by at least $100, and Xbox reported a manifold increase in component costs. According to Xbox head Ashi Sharma, the cost of memory and components has increased several times, and the market is facing a “crisis.”
