The opening weekend for "Girl of Steel" turned out to be weaker than even the most pessimistic forecasts.

The new DCU film "Supergirl" made a hard landing at the box office, grossing only $68 million worldwide on its debut weekend. Of this amount, $38 million came from the domestic box office in the US, and another $30 million from international markets. Analysts are already calling the start the first serious box office disappointment for the revamped DC cinematic universe under the leadership of James Gunn and Peter Safran: in North America, the film did not even reach the lower bound of the most pessimistic forecasts, which was $39-40 million.

The situation is exacerbated by the film's production budget, which, according to various media reports, ranged from $170 million to $186 million, excluding marketing costs. At the same time, there is little hope for strong word-of-mouth to rectify the situation: the film received a B− rating from CinemaScore — one of the worst results among modern DC comic book adaptations.
