"Supergirl" Started Worse Than Expected at the Box Office - Analysts Predict Financial Failure
"Supergirl" – the second film in the new DC cinematic universe under the direction of James Gunn and Peter Safran – earned $13 million on its first day of global release. Of this amount, $7.8 million came from previews and initial screenings in the US, and another $5.2 million came from international markets.
Although the preview results were higher than those of "Captain Marvel 2" ($6.6 million) and "Black Adam" ($7.6 million), projections for the opening weekend began to decline rapidly. While analysts expected the film to gross $47-65 million domestically on its opening weekend before ticket sales began, projections have now dropped to $39 million.
For comparison, even the disastrous "Captain Marvel 2," which ended its global run with $206 million, opened in the US with $47 million. Although the film budgets are incomparable ($307 million for "Captain Marvel 2" versus approximately $186 million for "Supergirl"), the Warner Bros. picture needs to gross about $430-450 million to break even, according to the standard profitability formula. Amid declining forecasts and a lukewarm reaction from critics and audiences, analysts doubt that the film will reach this mark.
