"Call of Duty is already bigger than the Marvel Cinematic Universe": Asha Sharma wants to turn Xbox into the biggest player in the entertainment market
Xbox leadership's ambitions extend far beyond the gaming industry.
Xbox head Asha Sharma believes that Call of Duty already surpasses the Marvel Cinematic Universe in scale. She made this statement in an interview with Entertainment Weekly, discussing the company's plans to develop gaming franchises beyond video games.
According to her, Hollywood's interest in Xbox projects is at an all-time high today, and the publication itself notes that Sharma's vision is to "turn Xbox not just into the biggest gaming company, but into one of the biggest players in the global entertainment market."
Comparing Call of Duty to the MCU seems ambitious, considering that in less than two decades, the Marvel Cinematic Universe has grossed over $30 billion worldwide. At the same time, the Activision Blizzard franchise has remained one of the most profitable entertainment brands in the world for many years. According to the company's official financial reports, as early as 2022, the series' total revenue exceeded $30 billion and has continued to grow since then thanks to new releases and in-game purchases.
Against this backdrop, the full-length Call of Duty film, scheduled for release in 2028, attracts particular attention. Recognized masters Taylor Sheridan ("Yellowstone") and Peter Berg ("Wind River") are responsible for creating the picture. Nevertheless, there are still no plot details about the upcoming film, which is why skeptical user comments regularly appear online. Many rightly fear that the Call of Duty adaptation, unlike adaptations of other video games, will resemble an ordinary military action movie and simply get lost among numerous Hollywood counterparts.
