"You have to do it": Family Convinced Kyle Chandler to Play Hal Jordan in "Lanterns"
The actor was hesitant about the project and put the script aside after his initial introduction.
Kyle Chandler almost turned down the role of Hal Jordan in the series "Lanterns." The actor wasn't interested in comics and had never appeared in superhero projects before, so the show's script initially didn't appeal to him – in 2024, Chandler read part of the pilot episode and set the text aside for a while.
Later, the actor decided to give "Lanterns" a second chance and held a home script reading with his wife Kathryn and daughter Sydney. Their reaction convinced him to accept the role:
"I asked, 'Do you want to read this with me? Let's assign characters and go through the whole script.' When we finished, they both jumped off the couch at the same time, pointed at me and said, 'You have to do it.'"
After that, Chandler promised his family he would accept the offer. In an interview with the Television Academy, he called "Lanterns" one of four special projects in his career, alongside the series "Friday Night Lights," "Bloodline," and "Early Edition."
Co-creator of "Lanterns" Damon Lindelof said that the writers had envisioned Chandler as Hal from the very beginning, although they hardly expected to get his consent:
"We asked ourselves, 'Who do we see in this role?' Kyle! He has a rough energy, cynicism, nobility, and a sense of humor. The whole package. But he had never been in superhero or similar genre projects. We thought, 'We're not going to get this guy.'"
"Lanterns" tells the story of veteran Green Lantern Corps member Hal Jordan and rookie John Stewart, who are drawn into a murder investigation in rural America.
John is played by Aaron Pierre, and Nathan Fillion returns to the role of Guy Gardner after "Superman." The series also stars Kelly Macdonald, Garrett Dillahunt, Poorna Jagannathan, Nicole Ari Parker, and Jason Ritter.
"Lanterns" premieres on August 17 on HBO and HBO Max. The first season consists of eight episodes. Before its premiere, the series received 90% positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes after 41 reviews.
