"Romeo and Juliet" with giant robots - details revealed for "Gundam" film starring Sydney Sweeney

The main characters will find themselves on opposite sides of a protracted space war.

Noah Centineo revealed the first details about the "Gundam" film, in which he stars alongside Sydney Sweeney. On the Happy Sad Confused podcast, the actor described the film as a large-scale space action movie that will combine action with a romantic story:

"It's a non-Shakespearean version of 'Romeo and Juliet' in space."

Centineo also confirmed that the action will take place in the Universal Century – the main Gundam timeline, which includes the original 1979 series and many of its sequels. The film's place in the chronology has not yet been revealed.

According to the official synopsis, Sweeney and Centineo will play pilots of combat mechs who fight on opposite sides of a long-standing war between Earth and its former space colonies.

The film was written and directed by Jim Mickle, who worked on the series "Sweet Tooth." Along with Sydney Sweeney and Noah Centineo, the film stars Michael Mando, Shioli Kutsuna, Nonso Anozie, Jason Isaacs, Jackson White, and Javon Walton.

Filming for "Gundam" concluded in late July 2026. The film's premiere date has not yet been announced.
