The "Batman" spin-off will be a rare R-rated DC film, combining elements of superhero cinema and body horror.
According to the Daily Mail, filming has begun in Liverpool for DC Studios' horror film "Clayface." The main role is played by Tom Rhys Harries ("The Gentlemen").
The plot follows a character who injects himself with an experimental drug to restore his damaged face, but soon discovers the ability to completely change his own body like malleable clay. Some shots from the set show the actor with a bandaged face, his character being taken to the hospital – likely related to the incident that triggered his transformation into Clayface.
The film is directed by James Watkins, who has previously worked in the horror genre, and the screenplay is written by Mike Flanagan, a recognized master of the genre.
Initially, "Clayface" was not part of DC Studios' plans. However, after several script iterations and a positive reaction from James Gunn, the project was approved for production.
Despite the film formally being considered a spin-off of "Batman," it is not connected to the cinematic universe where Robert Pattinson plays Bruce Wayne. Instead, "Clayface" will be part of a new line of DC projects called "Gods and Monsters," which already includes the film "Superman" and the second season of "Peacemaker."
The premiere of "Clayface" is scheduled for September 11, 2026.
