GPD continues to explore ways to simplify the use of a portable gaming device with an external battery.
GPD recently announced the Win 5 portable PC based on the Ryzen AI MAX+ 395 Strix Halo processor. The main feature of the model is the absence of a built-in battery. The device is powered only by external batteries or the mains, which caused a mixed reaction from users.
Replacing batteries requires turning off or putting the system into sleep mode, which is inconvenient during gaming sessions. To smooth out this disadvantage, GPD previously introduced a docking station for charging and recommended purchasing two batteries for quick replacement.
Now the company offers another solution: a prototype extension cable that allows you to carry the battery separately, for example, in your pocket. The cable is equipped with a screw connection to prevent accidental disconnection. This approach reduces the weight and size of the device and frees up space for cooling. At the same time, transferring power to a separate wire adds technical complexity and potential inconvenience.
The gaming community has received the innovation ambiguously. Some users note that the external battery reduces the load on the hands and simplifies battery replacement. Others believe that the additional cable and accessories contradict the very idea of portability.
Win 5 sales are expected in October 2025, but the exact release date and cost have not yet been announced.
