SuperNatural studio was working on a spiritual successor to SSX, but 2K canceled the project amid the gaming industry crisis.
Concept art from a canceled project by SuperNatural studio, founded by SSX creators Steve Rechtschaffner and Larry LaPierre, has been published on ArtStation. Art director Gordon Van, who previously collaborated with Electronic Arts, worked on the visual part.
Judging by the concepts, the game was supposed to offer a rich, stylized world focused on freedom of movement and performing tricks. Despite the absence of snowboarders themselves in the artwork, the design features the characteristic geometry of the tracks and a neon palette reminiscent of the aesthetics of SSX Tricky and Jet Set Radio.
The project, known under the codename Project Gravity, was conceived as a spiritual successor to SSX. Its development started after the founding of SuperNatural studio in 2020. In 2021, Rechtschaffner said that the team was striving to create an "arcade, intuitive, competitive and fun" game capable of bringing back that very energy.
2K was the publisher, but in February 2024, it became known that Project Gravity was canceled — the company withdrew from participation amid a general decline and cuts in the gaming industry. The SSX franchise has remained in oblivion since 2012, and so far nothing indicates its return.
