The sequel to "Mortal Kombat" will be released not in October 2025, as planned, but in May 2026.
Warner Bros. has postponed the premiere of the movie "Mortal Kombat 2". The official reason was not given, but, according to Deadline, the postponement may be related to the financial results of the studio.
According to the publication, the decision is due to the success of James Gunn's "Superman", which grossed $614 million worldwide. Thanks to this, Warner Bros. has reached key financial indicators for 2025 ahead of schedule and may postpone some major releases to the next reporting period.
The first "Mortal Kombat" showed weak results at the box office, grossing only $84.4 million with a budget of $55 million, which is partly attributed to the COVID-19 pandemic, but the studio expects more impressive results from "Mortal Kombat 2".
Although the postponement of premieres is often perceived as a signal of problems — whether it's reshoots or insufficient audience interest, in the case of "Mortal Kombat 2", the situation may be the opposite. Deadline emphasizes that Warner Bros. is confident in the commercial potential of the project and considers it an important part of its long-term strategy.
