Not all fans accepted the studio's decision to focus on the new Windblown project, but the developers prefer to follow their creative impulses rather than the pressure from the audience.
Motion Twin studio explained why it decided not to create Dead Cells 2 and instead took up the cooperative roguelike Windblown. In an interview with PCGamesN, creative director Yannick Berthier noted that the team focuses primarily on its own ideas and internal interest, rather than commercial calculations.
«We are driven by what we want to do. Motion Twin is a collective of people who strive to create new things. If we were only thinking about business, we would be talking about Dead Cells 2 now».
According to him, despite the constant requests from players — «in every post someone asks about Dead Cells 2» — the team preferred to «follow the call of the heart» and move forward.
After the announcement of the end of support for Dead Cells, part of the community expressed dissatisfaction. One of the popular comments on Reddit read: «Nobody asked for Dead Cells 2. We just didn't want the game to suddenly stop being updated».
It was previously reported that the co-developers from Evil Empire, who were responsible for post-release content, planned to release updates at least until 2025. However, Motion Twin artist Gwen Masse explained that the studio considered it natural to put an end to it when the team felt that Dead Cells had become the game they originally wanted to create.
Currently, Motion Twin is fully focused on Windblown — a new cooperative roguelike that will be its next major project. The game has been available in early access since October 2024 and has already collected 89% positive reviews based on more than 8000 reviews. The final release date has not yet been announced.
