Mega Crit had several ideas for what to do after the success of Slay the Spire.
The creators of the cult card roguelike Slay the Spire admitted that the game's sequel appeared… thanks to a lucky coin toss. In an interview with PC Gamer, Mega Crit co-founder Anthony Giovannetti said that after the release of the original, the team considered several concepts, and one of the options was a completely different project.
"We worked on a bunch of small prototypes, just having fun, until we decided: “Okay, let's get together again.” We had several directions: one was a completely new project, the other was a sequel. It seemed to me that there were interesting design challenges in the sequel. In the end, we just flipped a coin — and Slay the Spire 2 won. That's how we started working. The rest is history.
I don't even think I saw the toss myself. We were in Discord, and my colleague just told me the result, which, when you think about it, is a bit suspicious. But I believed him. I think Casey might have wanted the coin to land differently, because I've always been a fan of card games, and he's a fan of action games."
According to Giovannetti, the idea of returning to the Slay the Spire universe turned out to be a logical step. The studio wanted to implement mechanics that were impossible to implement in the original due to technical limitations and the need to support console, PC, and mobile versions. The developers felt that STS remained an "unfinished business" that could only be completed with new technologies.
Slay the Spire 2 will be released in early access in March 2026. Mega Crit promises that even the starting version will offer more events, bosses, and content than the full version of the original game.
