Bethesda head Todd Howard shared his opinion on the use of AI in video games, calling it a "tool" but emphasizing that it does not replace human creative intent.
At an event dedicated to the second series of the Fallout series, Howard said:
I see it as a tool. The creative concept comes from people, artists, first of all. We use it to go through some iterations faster, and not to generate everything. If you go back 10 years to that old version of Photoshop, you wouldn't want to use it.
He added:
We want to protect art. The human approach makes our projects special.
Howard's words come against the backdrop of the growing introduction of AI in the industry: in 2025, more than half of Japanese studios reported that they use AI, and Epic Games believes that "AI will be involved in almost all future products." Recent scandals, including the cancellation of Postal: Bullet Paradise due to generative AI, show that the topic continues to provoke heated discussions.
