The situation will not change even if fairgame$ is canceled.
In recent years, Sony has been actively promoting a strategy of transitioning to games-as-a-service, but the resounding failure of Concord has forced the company to reconsider its plans. Nevertheless, the Japanese giant is not abandoning this idea and continues to invest in such projects.
According to confirmed information, in 2026, Sony Interactive Entertainment will release more games-as-a-service on PlayStation 5 than traditional single-player titles. Currently, only two story-driven projects are known to be planned for next year: Marvel’s Wolverine and Saros. Everything else is games-as-a-service:
- Marathon (from Bungie)
- Marvel Tōkon
- MLB The Show 26
- fairgame$ (if it is not canceled)
Single-player games have traditionally been a strong point of PlayStation — it was thanks to them that the platform stood out in the market. Franchises like Uncharted, The Last of Us, and God of War have won the love of players and helped sell consoles. It is worth assuming that Sony is tired of standing out among competitors and spending a lot of money on the production of truly unique projects.
