Fortnite Launches Children's Casino Using Premium "V-Bucks" Currency for Spins - Epic Games Responds to Gambling Business
Recently, Epic Games decided to offer Fortnite players expanded opportunities to spend the premium currency "V-Bucks" — buying items within games created by other developers using "Creative Mode" (on "islands").
Some entrepreneurs took advantage of this. Soon, an image of a "children's casino" went viral in the Fortnite community — microtransactions were added to the "wheel of fortune." Players were offered to buy additional spins for "V-Bucks" to win prizes; various bonuses also went on sale.
Epic Games responded and made a change to the "Fortnite Island Monetization Guidelines":
Do not offer transactions on islands that directly or indirectly affect a prize wheel.
The following are unacceptable examples:
- a luck amplifier that may increase the chance of winning on a prize wheel;
- in-game content for purchasing prize wheel spins;
- an additional spin of the prize wheel.
