Lucasfilm is preparing the first feature-length release for \"Star Wars\" in seven years and intends to meet expectations.
Jon Favreau discussed his approach to the feature film \"The Mandalorian & Grogu\" during a panel at New York Toy Fair. According to him, the project was initially created with the film format in mind and will not look like an extended episode of the series.
\"We need to raise the bar for theaters. That means a higher aspect ratio for IMAX, sets that fully utilize that space… we need to amplify everything, including the storytelling.\"
He added that viewers need to be motivated to leave their homes and choose a movie theater among many alternatives, so the adventure itself must match the scale. It's not just about a technical upgrade: according to the director, viewers will see an \"upgraded\" version of Grogu.
Pedro Pascal reprises the main role. Jeremy Allen White and Sigourney Weaver have also joined the cast. The project will be the first feature-length outing of \"The Mandalorian\" in theaters and, in fact, a test of the audience's interest in \"Star Wars\" on the big screen after a seven-year hiatus.
According to media reports, the film's budget was $166.4 million, taking into account a tax deduction of $21.75 million provided by the state of California. For Disney-era films, this is the minimum figure: previously, \"Rogue One\" was considered the most \"modest\" with a budget of about $200 million, while the remaining franchise projects approached $270 million.
The premiere of \"The Mandalorian & Grogu\" is scheduled for May 22, 2026.
