The streets of Night City turned out to be too "hot" for mobile gaming.
Running a full-fledged PC version of Cyberpunk 2077 on a smartphone seemed like science fiction just a few years ago. Blogger ETA Prime demonstrated the game running via emulation on the flagship Android smartphone Red Magic 11 Pro.
This model was chosen because of the Snapdragon 8 Gen 5 processor and the built-in liquid cooling system. The GameHub platform with the Proton compatibility layer was used for emulation. The game was launched in 720p resolution on low settings with FSR 2.1 in Balanced mode.
Without frame generation, the device maintained about 30 FPS in most scenes. In heavy episodes, the indicator dropped to 27-28 frames, and when frame generation was turned on, the frequency increased to 40-50 FPS.
However, even the advanced cooling system could not cope with the load. The built-in benchmark recorded heating up to 100 °C with CPU loading at 60-80% and GPU at 50-60%.
The experiment shows that the growth in the performance of mobile chips, the development of emulators and scaling technologies like FSR are gradually blurring the line between portable PCs and smartphones. But thermal limitations still remain the main deterrent for this level of mobile gaming.
