Despite the rapid increase in RAM prices, the cost of current-generation consoles has not yet changed. However, experts believe that in the long term, manufacturers will still have to revise the price tags on hardware. Sony is already preparing for the possible consequences — and the chosen strategy is unlikely to please PlayStation 5 owners.
During the latest financial report, the company's financial director, Lin Tao, commented on the situation with rising component prices. According to her, Sony has already secured memory supplies for the end of the year as part of the next financial period to avoid disruptions during the high season. Nevertheless, the company intends to "minimize" the impact of rising RAM prices by "monetizing the installed base", as well as further increasing revenues from software and network services.
A direct increase in game prices is unlikely — Sony is interested in increasing software sales. However, the emphasis on network services may mean a revision of the cost of the PlayStation Plus subscription.
