Xbox Co-founder Comments on Leadership Change: "I Wouldn't Read Too Much Into It"

Ed Fries, the co-founder of Xbox, commented on the leadership change after Phil Spencer stepped down to give way to Asha Sharma, former director of CoreAI. Fries believes that this change is not as significant as it may seem.

A quick look at Asha's LinkedIn shows that she has worked on many different things. AI is a relatively new topic. I think Microsoft would still bet on AI, regardless of Asha's experience in this area. I wouldn't read too much into it.

The former head of Microsoft Game Studios, who was responsible for the acquisition of Bungie, Ensemble Studios, and Rare, also spoke about the role of AI in game development:

The thing is, no one in the gaming industry can ignore AI. [...] From a game design perspective, it can be beneficial. From a production perspective, there are definitely advantages. From a graphics perspective, which is more controversial, there are also positives. The only question is how far and how fast we will go.

Fries emphasized that AI can help developers, but will not replace them:

Will AI accelerate our ability to create more products? Of course. Will it take control and be able to generate games completely independently? Hardly. Again, this is a story about what it means to be human.

Asha Sharma stated that she will not force developers to use generative AI, although Seamus Blackley, the designer of the first Xbox, is less optimistic about the changes.
