Director of "Iron Man" admits mistake in dispute with Russo brothers over Tony Stark's death
Initially, Jon Favreau did not want Tony Stark to die in the film "Avengers: Endgame."
Jon Favreau admitted he was wrong when he tried to dissuade the Russo brothers from killing Tony Stark in "Avengers: Endgame." The director of the first "Iron Man" film said on Jimmy Kimmel's show that he was initially against such an ending for the hero's arc, but now considers it the right decision.
According to Favreau, he personally called Joe and Anthony Russo and warned them that viewers might find the death of a character many grew up with difficult to accept. Nevertheless, after the film's release, Favreau was convinced that the Russo brothers, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Robert Downey Jr. handled it perfectly.
"I talked to the Russo brothers and said, 'I don't know if people are going to like this... I don't know, it's really going to hit them hard because they were kids who grew up with this character.' But I have to say, they handled it very well. And Gwyneth [Paltrow] and Robert played wonderfully, and I think it added a special poignancy to the scene. They did a great job. I was wrong."
Although Tony Stark died in "Avengers: Endgame," using the Infinity Stones to destroy Thanos and his army, Robert Downey Jr. will return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe as Doctor Doom.
He will appear in the film "Avengers: Doctor Doom," which will be released on December 18, 2026. In addition, there have been increasing hints recently that the actor will not only continue to play Doctor Doom after the new "Avengers" films but may also return to the role of Iron Man in some form.
