A year later, Oblivion Remastered is still broken - Digital Foundry's verdict

The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered hasn't received updates for a long time, but the game still needs work.

Released last year, The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered received "mixed" reviews on Steam. Players were happy about the return of the Bethesda classic, but the technical state of the project caused outrage.

Several patches were released for the game, but there have been no new updates since July 2025. Recently, a Digital Foundry specialist returned to the game and conducted testing.

According to him, the current state of the game can be described as ranging from "annoying" to "almost unplayable" (depending on how much the player is willing to tolerate "constant slowdowns, stuttering, crashes, and other serious technical issues").

The specialist reminded that The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered retained the architecture (game logic) of the original, and Unreal Engine 5 is responsible for the graphics:

Both of these components are known for high CPU and GPU load, so their combination leads to extremely poor frame time stability, which only worsens as the game progresses. At the same time, the lack of updates hints that Bethesda probably didn't consider significant improvements possible — and the fact that they didn't even try to fix it looks even worse.

A year later, players of The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion Remastered are still facing the same problems, including performance degradation over time and crashes. Tests were conducted on PlayStation 5, but Digital Foundry noted that "other versions also remain problematic."
