Gabe Newell "every day" plays Dota 2, and toxic gamers call him names and urge him to uninstall the game
Match participants don't realize they are dealing with the boss of Valve.
Recently, players recalled an old interview with Gabe Newell. The boss of Valve loves playing Dota 2 and regularly logs into the MOBA.
In 2011, at the time of the interview, Gabe had already played about 800 hours of Dota 2. He noted then that other team members were also very engrossed in the project, and he felt like a "noob":
The coolest thing about Dota 2 is that, probably of all the games we've made, this is the one we play with the most passion. Every day when we finish working on the game, everyone goes home and plays it until 2-3 AM. So yes, I love playing this game. I don't measure up to the guys who play here, so of course, it's very interesting to watch them play. After 800 hours, I'm still a noob when it comes to Dota 2.
During the esports event The International 2025, Gabe Newell confirmed in his address that he continues to play Dota 2, although he sometimes encounters toxic players — they call him a "noob":
Hi, I'm Gabe Newell, 14 years ago we held the first The International tournament in Cologne, Germany. For me, that first TI was amazing. It was great to see the skill of the players and the enthusiasm of the community. Before this first tournament, I liked the game. However, after The International, I fell in love with it. And I love not only the game itself but also the community. Of course, people in chat trash talk me, and about once a week I'm told: "Hey, noob, uninstall the game and *censored*". But in reality, all of this is a manifestation of their enthusiasm and the energy they bring. That's why after so many years, I still play Dota 2 every day [...]
