A sovereign analogue of Unreal Engine announced - a new engine is being developed in Europe

Epic Games may soon have another competitor.

Recently, the co-founder of Guerilla Games studio and former technical director of Epic Games announced an ambitious project. He spoke about the development of a new game engine that should become a "European alternative" to popular American solutions – Unreal Engine and Unity, as well as Chinese engines.

Arjan Brussee is a veteran of the gaming industry who has been working since the 90s. He worked on Jazz Jackrabbit for Epic Games; co-founded Boss Key Productions with Cliff Bleszinski (it made LawBreakers and Radical Heights, and was subsequently closed); and later returned to Epic – for eight years he held various positions, including Global Product Management Director in the Unreal Engine team.

The sovereign European analogue of the Unreal Engine was named "The Immense Engine". In the De Technoloog podcast, Brussee stated:

Creating usable 3D worlds is becoming increasingly important – and certainly not just for games.

According to the developer, the "European origin" of the engine opens up opportunities for using The Immense Engine in the defense sector or logistics.

Brussee explained that modern engines, such as Unity, were created with a different approach ("created for people and by people who have to click on menus with a mouse"). And he himself sees opportunities for a game engine based on new development principles and with "full AI integration":

The development of AI means that we need to approach the development of such critical software differently. As someone with a lot of experience and an idea of how things should work, I see opportunities here [...] If you are smart enough and know how to properly use a good system of AI agents, you can do the work of ten to fifteen people.
