Head of DC Studios Peter Safran Comments on "Supergirl" Box Office Failure
The leadership of the revamped DC cinematic universe is not going to revise its strategy due to a single failure.
After the weak debut of "Supergirl," which grossed only $68 million worldwide in its opening weekend, DC Studios co-head Peter Safran admitted that the studio had expected completely different results. Nevertheless, he made it clear that a single failure would not make the studio abandon its planned course:
"While 'Supergirl' did not meet our box office expectations, it is just one element of DC Studios' large-scale, long-term strategy, in which we remain fully confident."
Peter Safran reminded that the revamped DCU cinematic universe was originally conceived as a marathon, not a sprint. The studio is expecting several major releases in the near future.
The first of these will be James Watkins' body horror film "Clayface," which will be released on October 23, 2026. This will be followed by the "Lanterns" series on HBO, and on July 9, 2027, James Gunn's "Superman: Legacy" will hit theaters.
