"Even a year is too long": Marvel reveals release dates for third and fourth seasons of "X-Men '97"
Marvel is ready to cut down on episode count if it means new seasons come out more frequently.
Marvel Television head Brad Winderbaum revealed the release dates for the next seasons of the animated series "X-Men '97". According to the plan, the third season will appear on Disney+ in 2027, and the fourth will follow in 2028.
Thus, the producer confirmed plans to switch to annual releases of new seasons, despite a two-year break between the first and second. Earlier, the animated series producer Larry Houston explained the delay by production problems, which the studio has already managed to solve:
"Fortunately, production issues will not recur. There was a huge time gap between the first and second seasons. The management learned from this situation, so this will not happen with the third and fourth seasons. It was a one-time hiccup."
Winderbaum himself, however, considers even a one-year break too long:
"Even a year is too long. I remember watching "X-Men" every day after school, and then the episodes were constantly repeated. But, of course, now episodes can be rewatched on streaming, where everything is available at any time."
The decision to speed up production has already affected the duration of the animated series. The first season consisted of ten episodes, while the second had nine. According to Winderbaum, when working on streaming projects, Marvel has to choose between the number of episodes and the premiere dates:
"It's a completely different business now, and streaming services have their limitations. The number of episodes always matters, and sometimes you have to choose: release the season earlier or make more episodes? I usually vote for an earlier release, even if some stories have to be postponed until subsequent seasons."
Currently, the creators are finishing work on the third season and preparing storyboards for the fourth. At the same time, Marvel is already considering the more distant future of "X-Men '97": producer Eric Lewald said that Winderbaum would like to bring the animated series to ten seasons.
