Director of body horror "Clayface" was inspired by Sam Raimi and Brian De Palma
James Watkins tried to find a balance between extreme horror and black humor.
The director of "Clayface," James Watkins, spoke about the main sources of inspiration for the new film in the DC cinematic universe. The greatest influence on the picture came from "The Evil Dead" and other horror films by Sam Raimi, in which cruelty coexists with absurdity and black humor:
"There's definitely a certain Sam Raimi influence there. He knows how to push horror almost to absurdity and combine it with humor. I'm talking about absurdity in a good way. He goes so far that we all think, 'My God, this is too much,' but we understand that it's intentional, and we accept the rules of the game. I was inspired by the boldness of his approach."
Watkins also named Brian De Palma's work, who directed "Carrie," "Scarface," and "The Untouchables," as an important reference point. The director did not disclose details, noting that viewers themselves will notice the director's influence during the viewing.
"Clayface" will tell the story of Hollywood actor Matt Hagen, whose body begins to undergo frightening changes. Watkins previously promised not to show the character's final transformation in promos: the full appearance of the monster will only be seen by audiences in theaters for the first time. The published trailers only showed individual consequences of the transformation, including a scene with eyelids stuck together, which caused horror even among the film crew.
"Clayface" will premiere on October 23.
