For many gamers, the modern UE5 engine has long been a signal of all sorts of technical problems.

Some gamers are actively criticizing games on Unreal Engine 5 for technical issues, such as stuttering and FPS drops. There is an opinion that the problem lies in the engine itself.

Recently, during Unreal Fest 2025, Epic boss Tim Sweeney was asked about performance and optimization issues with Unreal Engine 5.

Sweeney emphasized that the main reason why games on this engine perform poorly on certain system configurations is due to the development process, or rather, the order of its development. The manager explained that many start development on powerful machines, and postpone optimization for weak PCs to the final stage of development.

He noted that optimization is not an easy task and should be implemented in the early stages of work. Epic is now "preparing a series of measures to solve this problem", they are going to:

  • Improve Unreal Engine 5 support and add automation features for various devices that will speed up and simplify the work of developers.
  • Improve developer training to provide specialized training in optimization and raise awareness of how optimization should begin early in the development process

According to Sweeney, games have become more complex than they were 10 years ago, and now optimization problems cannot be solved only at the engine level — game and engine developers need to cooperate to solve emerging problems.
