Game creator Hideo Kojima rarely talks about the beginning of his journey, but in an interview for a Japanese magazine, he shared a touching story that changed his life forever.
He admitted that an anonymous manager, the only one who believed in his talent, stood behind his career.
Kojima spoke about his first attempts to find a job in 1985. He studied at a small private university, and it was more difficult for him than for other applicants. He was often rejected because of his specialty, and in interviews he was ridiculed for saying that he wrote stories.
The turning point came at an interview at a medical equipment company. He decided to be honest and show his true self. Although he did not get the job, the HR manager said words that shocked Kojima:
"Kojima, I think a creative job would suit you better. Try it."
Kojima took the advice and focused on finding a job in the gaming industry. For the first time, he could tell the truth in interviews. In 1986, he got a job at Konami, which led to the creation of the iconic Metal Gear series.
Later, Kojima himself conducted interviews and always tried to act like his "mentor," whose name he had forgotten.
"I listened carefully to the candidates and gave advice to those who were not suitable. Just like that manager who changed my life."
