The Russian open-source engine, into which a billion rubles were promised, has been left without a developing company. Now its fate lies in the hands of the community and ITMO University.
According to Kommersant, the legal entity behind the development of the Russian game engine Nau Engine is in the process of liquidation. The company "N-Gin," established specifically for the project, is officially ceasing to exist — corresponding data has appeared in the SPARK database.
Nevertheless, Nau Engine itself will not be shut down. The APRIORI association explained that further development of Nau Engine will be based on the principles of open source code and decentralized development, but with the support of ITMO University. This development model does not require a legal entity.
Nau Engine was introduced in 2023 as an ambitious alternative to Unity and Unreal Engine. VK planned to invest up to one billion rubles in the project, but after the release of the beta version in November 2024, interest from the industry turned out to be minimal. According to Kommersant, most Russian studios preferred to continue working with foreign tools.
According to developers surveyed by the publication, the liquidation of the legal entity was only a matter of time: part of the team had already moved to ITMO, and the rest had dispersed to other projects. VK and Astrum Entertainment declined to comment to Kommersant.
