According to Akihiro Hino, in the era of widespread AI use, the key skill for young professionals will be a "sense of aesthetics."

The head of Level-5 studio, Akihiro Hino, known for the Ni no Kuni and Professor Layton series, recently shared his thoughts on the role of generative artificial intelligence in video game development. According to him, about 80–90% of the code in modern projects is created using AI tools, and then people refine and finalize it.

According to the Japanese publication Famitsu, Hino gave a speech at the welcoming ceremony for new participants in the Top Game Creators Academy (TGCA) program — an initiative of the Computer Entertainment Supplier's Association (CESA) of Japan in collaboration with government organizations. The program aims to train a new generation of young developers. Hino, who serves as the director of TGCA, emphasized that in the era of widespread AI use, the key skill for young professionals will be "a sense of aesthetics".

Hino noted that it is important to be able to distinguish good from bad and choose only the best elements for implementation in the project, regardless of whether the content was created by AI or by a person. To become the best in the industry, aspiring developers will need to skillfully master AI tools and use their aesthetic sense for further refinement.

Level-5 itself uses Stable Diffusion, ChatGPT, and VOICEVOX to create assets, write lines, and voice characters — and does not hide this. However, as Hino explained, all elements created by AI are necessarily refined and improved by people before being integrated into the game.
