Players will face strange and often disturbing situations.

According to Frictional Games' Creative Director Thomas Grip, Ontos should not be perceived as a traditional horror game. While classic Frictional games, like the first Amnesia, focused on survival and primal fear, here the developers are betting on intellectual and existential tension. Players will face strange and often disturbing situations that require analysis and finding the best solution, rather than running and hiding.

In Ontos, for example, instead of a pursuing monster, the player may find themselves face to face with a person stuck inside a computer made of living rats. This creature promises to "explain what is happening," which in itself sounds creepy enough. As Grip notes, the goal of the game is not to drive the player into the shadows, but to puzzle them and make them ask questions. Elements of stealth and "cat-and-mouse" will remain, but will be minimized and will almost always allow alternative ways to overcome obstacles.

Experiments are definitely the highlight of the game. In a way, it can be compared to Shadow of the Colossus, where boss battles are the core of the gameplay. Many episodes and locations in the game are essentially a long preparation for experiments. Testing tools, finding ways to interact, accumulating resources, understanding the stakes, and generally just gathering enough information to overcome these complex and multi-layered scenarios. [...] Most of the game is built on the anticipation of excitement and fear of what the next major experiment will be.
