The film, shot and financed by blogger Markiplier, posted a solid result even before its wide release.
The film "Iron Lung," based on the indie horror game Iron Lung by David Szymanski — the creator of DUSK and Gloomwood — has started confidently at the American box office. The picture, shot and financed by YouTuber Markiplier, earned about $3.5 million from evening preview screenings in the United States on a budget of less than $3 million and with minimal marketing expenses.
Despite the fact that part of the box office revenue traditionally remains with theaters (in the United States this is about 40–55%), the result can be considered impressive — the project effectively recouped half of its budget even before its full release.
Iron Lung entered full release on January 30. Already now, analysts are projecting grosses of around $9-10 million for its first weekend, despite a limited release and the absence of a release in many countries. For comparison, the U.S. previews were more successful than those of Sam Raimi's new film "Send Help!," which collected $2.2 million over the same period, and also surpassed the American launch of "Return to Silent Hill," which earned $3.2 million in its first weekend.
The plot of the adaptation, like that of the original game, unfolds in a grim post-apocalyptic universe. Survivors send prisoners to explore an ocean of blood on a distant moon in search of resources, while the main action centers on a solitary descent into the depths aboard a sealed underwater capsule.
In addition to Mark "Markiplier" Fischbach himself, who played the lead role, the film also stars Troy Baker, Caroline Rose Kaplan, and Elsie Lovelock. The music was composed by Andrew Hulshult — a composer known for soundtracks to DUSK, Doom Eternal: The Ancient Gods, Prodeus, Amid Evil, as well as the remasters of Heretic and Hexen.
There is currently no information about a possible theatrical release in Russian cinemas or the date of the digital release.
