Not everyone believes that a "change of engine" is the solution for Bethesda.
Some players believe that Bethesda should have abandoned the "outdated engine" Creation Engine long ago and used a different solution, for example the modern Unreal Engine.
During a conversation between Press Box PR and the lead designer of The Elder Scrolls V: Skyrim, they touched on the topic of fans' misconceptions about Creation Engine, the engine's limitations, and a potential transition to UE.
Bruce Nesmith expressed the opinion that the transition would require "colossal effort" and that, possibly, for some time the developers would not even be able to work on the game itself (since they would need to figure out the technical specifics):
[Moving to a new engine[ is a huge undertaking. We ran into this when we made Fallout 76. To add multiplayer, the engine had to be radically changed. That made the task incredibly more complicated for the team.
According to the developer, Creation Engine should not be abandoned — it can and should be improved for current tasks:
Creation Engine has already been tailored to Bethesda's needs for so many years, so right now it is probably more reasonable to continue working with it. The benefits of switching to Unreal Engine would most likely only become apparent after two games.
Bruce Nesmith noted that every Bethesda game released brought significant improvements to Creation Engine:
[The engine] is constantly being improved. There is an entire team dedicated solely to this. And the main advantage is that you can continue development, because the engine already works. There is no need to figure out how to implement something completely new from scratch. I would advocate keeping Creation Engine and continuing to work with it. If there is something that can only be implemented in Unreal, add it to Creation Engine.
