HBO has launched the development of a series based on Baldur’s Gate 3, which will be a direct continuation of the game's events. Craig Mazin has taken on a key creative role in the project — he is the creator, writer, executive producer, and showrunner of the series.
As Deadline notes, Craig Mazin completed Baldur’s Gate 3 in "Honor Mode," and has been regularly running tabletop campaigns as a dungeon master for the past fifteen years.
"After spending nearly a thousand hours in the incredible world of Baldur’s Gate 3, the opportunity to continue the story created by Larian and Wizards of the Coast is a dream come true for me. I am a devoted fan of D&D and how Sven Vincke and his talented team have managed to adapt this universe. I look forward to the chance to bring Baldur’s Gate and all its amazing characters to the screen with the utmost respect and love, and I am sincerely grateful to Gabriel Marano and his team at Hasbro for trusting this incredibly important franchise."
The series will be produced by Hasbro Entertainment in conjunction with HBO. The executive producers include Jacqueline Lesko, Cecil O’Connor, and Gabriel Marano, and the head of storytelling at Wizards of the Coast, Chris Perkins, is serving as a consultant on the project.
Unlike "The Last of Us," where HBO followed the original material almost verbatim, the Baldur’s Gate series will take a different path. The plot starts immediately after the finale of Baldur’s Gate 3 and focuses on the consequences of decisions that changed the game world. The story will center on new characters, but they will intersect with familiar characters from the game along the way.
