The company has received the corresponding patent.
Sony has received a new patent that sheds light on an updated version of the PSSR 2.0 scaling technology for the PlayStation 5 Pro.
As is usually the case with technical documentation, the text is accompanied by complex wording and diagrams, but it is clear from the description that we are talking about an improved AI upscaler for the console.
Judging by the documents, PSSR 2.0 will be a more efficient reworking of the existing technology. The update should provide a higher frame rate and better resolution when scaling is enabled. In the current version of PSSR, the system strives to improve image clarity without a serious loss of performance — often by reducing the native resolution, followed by "cleaning" the image using AI.
However, the patent hints that this approach may change. Instead of directly reducing the resolution, the new version will likely pay more attention to anti-aliasing and frame rate stabilization, trying to find a more balanced solution between performance and image quality.
Theoretically, this should help eliminate some of the typical problems of the current PSSR implementation — for example, artifacts and strange visual reconstructions that occur in situations where the algorithm incorrectly interprets the scene after reducing the original resolution.
It is not yet known exactly when the PS5 Pro will receive the updated technology, but, if rumors are to be believed, console owners will not have to wait long.
