A new market study has cast doubt on Sony's publishing strategy. Analysts point out that PlayStation game ports to PC are attracting fewer and fewer players.
According to Newzoo, in the first three months after release on computers, PC users account for only 13% of the total game audience on average. This is a signal that the previous model of transferring console hits to a new platform is gradually losing its effectiveness.
One of the key reasons is the large gap between the release on PS5 and the release of the PC version. For comparison, for AAA games with simultaneous launch on consoles and computers, the PC market accounts for up to 44% of the total audience over the same period.
Experts note that releasing ports several years later, as in the case of Horizon Zero Dawn or Marvel’s Spider-Man, leads to the fact that the main demand has already been satisfied on the console. Because of this, the PC version becomes less attractive.
The decline in interest is also visible in large series. Marvel’s Spider-Man attracted about 14% of players on PC, while Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 attracted only 5%.
This decline coincides with reports from early 2025 stating that Sony is considering abandoning porting its biggest hits. One of the reasons cited is the competition strategy: Xbox and PC are getting closer, and PlayStation wants to attract the audience to the future PS6 with strong exclusives.
