Lucas Pope, the author of Papers, Please and Return of the Obra Dinn, has stated that he is not talking about new projects due to concerns related to AI.
According to him, he continues to work on games, but does not share details so that his ideas are not "picked up by AI" or borrowed by others before the development is completed.
In the Mike & Rami Are Still Here podcast, he noted:
This is not a hard rule. I just got this feeling, and I became uncomfortable talking about what I'm working on. I hope this changes, and I can safely discuss my projects again.
Pope also became more cautious after the success of Papers, Please and Return of the Obra Dinn, which made him famous in the indie scene.
I was lucky with these two games. I can do the same again – focus on narrative, gameplay and mechanics. But who knows, maybe it will be a complete failure. And I don't want to tempt fate too much.
The developer admits that the pressure and concerns surrounding AI are affecting his approach, but hopes to return to open discussion of his new ideas in the future.
