Ray Tracing Didn't Meet Expectations? Most Gamers Ignore NVIDIA Technology
It's been 8 years since NVIDIA introduced ray tracing as the "future of gaming." According to a Hardware Unboxed survey, about 70% of gamers either don't enable RT or do so rarely and only in specific games. The editorial team pointed out several issues with the technology.
RT is practically useless in online games where high FPS and visibility are crucial. In Fortnite, players with RT enabled see worse than on low settings.
Even in single-player projects, the effect is often minimal, and the performance drop is noticeable. According to Hardware Unboxed, RT looks impressive only in certain games, such as Cyberpunk 2077. The price for this remains high.
Another reason is that the first generations of graphics cards with RT support can be considered a marketing ploy by NVIDIA. Their performance is insufficient for stable operation of the technology at high settings and resolution.
Another problem is specifically noted: developers have started to put less effort into standard lighting, which makes new games look weaker without RT.
Also, the technology often creates noise, and noise reduction systems reduce image clarity. This is noticeable, for example, in Assassin's Creed Shadows from Ubisoft.
