HBO Renews "Harry Potter" Series for Second Season and Introduces New Showrunner
HBO is accelerating the production of the new "Harry Potter" adaptation to complete the work before the child actors grow up.
HBO has officially renewed the "Harry Potter" series for a second season even before the premiere of the first. This seems like a mere formality, as the show was initially announced as a long-term adaptation of the entire Harry Potter series, planned for ten years or slightly more.
The first season, adapting "Philosopher's Stone," is still in production. Filming is expected to conclude in the coming weeks, followed by a short break. Production for the second season, which will adapt "Chamber of Secrets," will begin this autumn.
Along with the announcement, HBO reported that Jon Brown, who previously worked as a writer for the first season, has been promoted to co-showrunner and will now lead the series alongside Francesca Gardiner — both previously worked on "Succession."
According to Gardiner, Brown's promotion is directly related to the acceleration of production. The creators do not want long breaks between season filming, as the children playing the main roles are growing up faster than large-scale fantasy series with complex post-production usually take to film.
The premiere of the first season of "Harry Potter" will take place on December 25, 2026.
