"Haters were right": After 3 years, indie developers abandoned battle royale and remade the game
The developers of Scramble Knights Online decided to change the game's format and give players a co-op adventure.
Recently, Funktronic Labs presented a video diary dedicated to the Scramble Knights Online project. Initially, it was a battle royale, and the studio had been working on the game for several years.
This caused a less than positive reaction online – the game was called "PvP slop" and generally, people were not thrilled about yet another battle royale game.
The developers reported that over 25,000 players participated in playtests of the Battle Royale mode. In the end, the studio still reconsidered the concept and admitted that "haters were right":
Many of you enjoyed the game, you became part of our community – and we are sincerely grateful for this support. However, as development continued, we had doubts about the realism of long-term support for a large-scale battle royale. Large lobbies require a significant and stable concurrent player audience. As an indie studio, we do not have the marketing reach and resources of an AAA publisher to ensure this at launch.
After additional tests, the creators of Scramble Knights Online decided to change the format. They will not close the project but will offer players a different adventure:
Scramble Knights Online is now a multiplayer adventure RPG about cooperative expeditions with friends in the shared online kingdom of Terracotta. Explore a vast archipelago, embark on adventures, fight monsters, conquer dungeons, find treasures, and earn rewards. Then return home to upgrade your gear before embarking on a new journey.
