Insider explains why Sony is abandoning physical discs for PlayStation
Maximum profit from every copy sold.
Following Sony Interactive Entertainment's loud announcement of completely discontinuing the release of physical discs for PlayStation games starting January 2028, discussions continue online about the reasons for such a radical step. According to well-known insider and gaming hardware specialist Kepler_L2, the decision is not only related to the market's shift to digital distribution but also to the specifics of the upcoming PlayStation 6 and the rising cost of production.
The insider noted that his previously published estimate of the PlayStation 6's cost, which approaches $1000, was initially based on a disc-less version of the console.
My component cost estimate was calculated specifically for the digital model. The abandonment of discs is primarily needed to simplify the transition to a "console + portable device" ecosystem, as well as to increase revenue from game sales due to a higher average price and the inability to resell physical copies.
According to the insider, this approach will allow Sony to partially offset the increased costs of producing the new generation of consoles. Furthermore, the digital model eliminates the used game market, allowing the company and publishers to earn more profit from each copy sold.
