The developer is going to change the philosophy of his approach to games.

The head of Battlestate Games is not only developing Escape from Tarkov but also working on a new game, Fragmentary Order. He recently spoke with IGN and discussed the project.

He said that he always dreamed of making not just “Tarkov in Space,” but a real sci-fi game — trying to simulate the future and make it so that “everything looks as realistic and grounded as possible, so that people believe in it”:

I realized that life is short, and you need to do what you can, especially if it still brings joy. I decided to give it a try. And, of course, since I know how to make realistic hardcore FPS and extraction shooters, I thought this could be my next step. I think the experience with Tarkov was like a ten-year testing phase for us, after which it's time to make “real” games — even more complex and ambitious. This is another attempt to create something truly interesting, new in the genre, and perhaps even invent a new genre — as it was with extraction shooters. Who knows?

Buyanov cannot yet reveal the mechanics of Fragmentary Order, as other companies might use these ideas. Nevertheless, he mentioned that the game will have “several survival options,” but clarified:

It won't necessarily be the classic scheme: infil / exfil. There will be different ways to stay alive. We will try to break familiar patterns, because, again, “Tarkov” actually created the concept of extraction shooters itself. It has already become a pattern: entered, loaded, shot, exited, evacuated, and if you died — lost everything, etc. But I want to break this pattern and add something new to enrich the gameplay. The main goal is to bring realism into everything. The most interesting thing about Fragmentary Order is the use of future mechanics and aspects of the future, potential technologies.

Speaking about the difficulty of Fragmentary Order, Buyanov stated that the game will be even more difficult and less tolerant of mistakes, but the rewards for it will be greater:

Imagine “perfect Tarkov” that keeps you in the game because you start to feel outside your usual circle — depriving you of your usual source of dopamine in life, even outside of games. You will literally wait for the moment when you get these desired emotions from the game. And, hopefully, this will change the very philosophy of gaming into something else. You won't “just play” — you will live this game, live in this universe. And it won't be for everyone. That's the point. We initially emphasize that this is not for everyone. In fact, it was the same with “Tarkov.”

The basic mechanics and the first location for Fragmentary Order are almost ready. The team continues to expand the lore of the universe. Work is also underway on the game's gameplay trailer.
