Brandon Sanderson Celebrates 20th Anniversary of "Mistborn" and Discusses Film Adaptation Progress
The film still has several important stages to go through before production begins.
Brandon Sanderson hosted a celebratory stream on his YouTube channel dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the "Mistborn" cycle — the first book in the series, known in Russia as "Prakh i Stal" (Ash and Steel), was released on July 17, 2006. During the broadcast, the writer shared news about the film adaptation and confirmed that the first film will definitely not be released in 2027.
Sanderson is currently focused on the film's screenplay, which, according to the counter on his official website, is 91% complete. However, after the current version is finished, the text will need to go through several stages of revisions and receive approval from Apple. The writer does not yet know how long this process will take.
Only after that will the search for a director begin, followed by casting, pre-production, filming, and a lengthy post-production phase, so fans will have to be patient.
The "Mistborn" adaptation will be the first project under Sanderson's large-scale agreement with Apple. The cycle is planned to be brought to the screen in the format of feature films. The writer himself serves as screenwriter, producer, and chief consultant for the project, and also retains the right to approve the cast.
After completing work on the film, Sanderson plans to focus on a series based on "The Stormlight Archive." The first season will consist of ten episodes, with the writer serving as showrunner and personally writing most of the scripts.
Separately from the deal with Apple, Tomorrow Studios is developing an adaptation of the science fiction cycle "Skyward." Sanderson is writing the pilot episode with "Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D." creators Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen.
