Todd Howard commented on Bethesda layoffs and said he considered ending his career
The developer is currently working on The Elder Scrolls VI.
It recently became known about a new round of layoffs at Microsoft (Xbox), in which thousands of specialists will lose their jobs. The cuts also affect Bethesda Game Studios.
Todd Howard recently gave an interview to Windows Central journalist Jez Corden and shared his thoughts on what is happening. The developer reminded that in its 40-year history, the company has already gone through difficult times.
Howard mentioned the difficulties in the 90s, when the unsuccessful An Elder Scrolls Legend: Battlespire and The Elder Scrolls Adventures: Redguard were released:
Then we had to change ourselves and our approach to development. Then we joined ZeniMax and worked on many different projects, and then we had to transform again in 2016. We split up and changed our approach to supporting key franchises. And I think we are now at a stage of change again.
In a recent conversation with Bloomberg journalist Jason Schreier, Todd Howard said that he considered ending his career. However, in the end, he decided that he would continue to work:
To be honest, there was a period when I thought [about leaving] — what it would even look like. Not that “it’s about to happen,” but what it could look like. Now I don’t think about it anymore. I see the work we do, and I just love it. I love working with these people.
Howard noted that there are people in the gaming industry who are “a little older” than him and are still making interesting projects.
Bethesda Game Studios is currently making The Elder Scrolls VI and recently announced the development of Fallout 5.
