19-year-old Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation Gets Fan PC Port - Arcade Flight Sim Runs in 4K 60 FPS
Recently, players have once again remembered Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation. The arcade flight simulator from the famous franchise was released in 2007 on the Xbox 360 console, and never officially made it to PC.
Earlier this year, an unofficial PC port of Ace Combat 6: Fires of Liberation was released: at the time, the project was in a “playable” state, but users noted technical issues.
This month, the author of the YouTube channel “Video Game Esoterica” conducted a new test and showed gameplay. On his system, the PC port version 1.0 ran stably, and on a laptop too.
From a technical standpoint, this port of the Xbox 360 version of the game did not completely move away from emulation. The graphical component relies on RexGlue/Xenia; the game code was statically recompiled to x86-64.
sal063 published the project “AC6_recomp” in open access on GitHub. The modder emphasizes that this is an unofficial project, not approved by Bandai Namco Entertainment, Project Aces, or Microsoft. The repository contains only source code, but does not include game data (assets) — for the project to work, the player must “provide their own legally acquired copy of the game”.
In early October, the release of the new installment of the franchise, Ace Combat 8: Wings of Theve, is expected on consoles and PC.
