An important part of Resident Evil is the soundtrack and effects. Their realism almost cost the life of the main character's performer.
Recently, the voice actor for Leon S. Kennedy from the Resident Evil franchise revealed details of recording lines and sounds for the character. During Fan Expo Canada, Nick Apostolides shared how he once got carried away and lost consciousness while working.
He recalls that it happened at the end of a long workday. He started choking himself and overdid it — lost consciousness while recording a scene when the enemy-stalker Tyrant lifted Leon by the neck and "squeezed all the life out".
Nick wanted to demonstrate a convincing acting performance:
«To make it sound realistic, I got water in my throat [to create the effect of drowning in blood], and squeezed my hands around my neck. I felt a little sick, but I thought \"I could do another take\" and squeezed so hard that I cut off the flow of oxygen to my brain».
At first, the director even thought that the loss of consciousness was part of the performance, «until he saw that [Nick's] face turned as white as a ghost, and his leg was twitching».
In the end, everything worked out, and the voice actor for Leon is very proud of the resulting work — it was included in the game: «I feel like I accomplished my mission» and joked: «Now I play such scenes on my knees, in case I lose consciousness again».
