Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands became one of the most unusual Borderlands spin-offs, bringing the series' signature style to a fantasy world with magic, monsters, and humor.
The game proved successful and has gathered a dedicated audience since its release, who loved its atmosphere and combination of role-playing with classic shooter mechanics. Judging by the statements, Gearbox is not going to stop and plans to develop the universe further.
In an interview with All Out Gaming, Gearbox Entertainment head Randy Pitchford noted that Wonderlands has become a starting point for future ideas. He recalled that the story began with the Assault on Dragon Keep add-on for Borderlands 2, which inspired the creation of a standalone game. According to Pitchford, he and many Gearbox developers love fantasy, so the world of Bunkers & Badasses (a parody of Dungeons & Dragons within the Borderlands universe), based on the traditions of tabletop RPGs, provides scope for new stories.
Tiny Tina’s Wonderlands has already shown its strength, exceeding the sales of the first Borderlands. There are rumors that the development of the sequel started back in 2022, and in 2024 the project underwent a "soft reboot". Now Gearbox is preparing for the release of Borderlands 4 — the game will be released on September 12 on PC, PS5 and Xbox Series X|S, and the version for Nintendo Switch 2 will appear on October 3.
